Cape Reinga

Cape Reinga is a sacred place.  It is where spirits take flight to the next realm.  If you sit very silently and listen, you can hear the spirits shuffling by you on their way to continue their journey.

Reinga, or the Rerenga-Wairua, the Leaping-off Place of the spirits of the departed.  You will hear it referenced in every lament and funeral waiata or song.

Our journey to the Northern tip of the island began at 6:00am just before the sun was set to rise.

Much to our pleasant surprise, a couple made the early morning trek to see us and wish us well on our way!

We also had a beautiful welcome from the Kaumatua Pineaha Murray and his wife Kowhai.  They blessed our trip, and wished us well.  It felt like exactly the right way to officially begin our journey.

I’ll share some pictures from the morning with you now, as images tell a better story than me waffling on ever could.

  1. I’m sorry we didn’t know you were coming up North! We are Tesla enthusiasts (looking forward to picking up our Model X when we return to the States), have placed orders for Model 3’s, and love talking Tesla/ EV to people here in NZ. If you heading past the Mangonui area, it would be super to meet you!
